"It is more important now than ever that nursing becomes involved and engaged in developing and implementing nursing practice at St. Vincent. I was part of the group that suggested realignment to our Clinical Care Council (CCC). Our CNO approved the realignment, and it has been implemented. We are hoping that this alignment allows for more productive utilization of time and increased focus on attaining our goals within the Nursing Strategic Plan. I am also proud of the work that our Unit-Based Practice Council (UBPC) has done this year. The UBPC and CCC have provided me with the opportunity to learn more about leadership, communication, the importance of teamwork and how that impacts patient care. This experience has also given me an understanding of the future of nursing and how we can impact the future of St. Vincent and carry on our mission."
"Seeing how people deal with their illnesses has helped me put things in perspective. I have become more compassionate and caring. I really enjoy the patient contact and treating each patient with quality, care and respect. The doctors in Radiology do an excellent job and the staff is very experienced – they are a joy to work with. Also, the people I work with come from different backgrounds but work well as a team. If anyone needs help, you don't even have to ask for it – everyone just pitches in."
"I have worked for St. Vincent for 37 years and get a great deal of satisfaction from my job. My mom and dad worked here – mom was a nurse's aide and dad was supervisor of the power plant. My sister, Pat, works in Revenue Cycle. The team I work with in our maintenance department is the most talented I've worked with. We have a Master Plumber, two Master Electricians, a refrigerator specialist, a steamfitter and six highly skilled mechanics. I enjoy knowing that what I do makes it easier for the staff to get their jobs done. My job also contributes to patient safety. A few years back, I was called to the ER to cut a three-inch nail off between a patient's foot and shoe. I used a side-cutter hand tool. Then the patient was able to go to surgery."
"The most satisfying aspects of my job are the challenges I face each day. Every day is different, and I am never bored. I love knowing that when I leave for the day, I did a great job. I also have freedom in my job, both at work – I work independently – and away from work. I am able to leave when family life is in need of attention. I have grown in knowledge since starting at St. Vincent. I am lucky to have been taught by some great mentors, and I continue to learn every day. My fellow colleagues are very friendly, love their jobs and are helpful to all in need. They are positive, hard working and a joy to work with. I think St. Vincent Hospital is a cut above the other hospitals because they accept all patients, no matter their ability to pay, and get their employees involved in community service and charities."
"I've been with the system almost five years, and I have grown as a person by helping staff and patients when there is a cultural barrier. I especially enjoy working with families and patients when I interpret for them. Being able to help patients and staff understand each other is very satisfying. I work with an excellent team of interpreters who are professional and competent at what they do and are great human beings. Here, we are encouraged to be the best we can be. Right now, I am using the tuition assistance program to obtain my MBA. I'm almost half way through the program at University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. I've also grown as a leader through classes here at St. Vincent's Leadership Development Institutes."
