"I've come to learn that my greatest accomplishments are not necessarily the outcomes I've achieved, but the standards held in the process of achieving those outcomes. Obtaining full accreditation during a time of administrative change was rewarding. Initiating the Department of Continuing Education and fostering the Faith Community Nursing (Parish Nursing) Program are highlights as well. The benefit of working at St. John's is that you grow professionally and spiritually, because it is an organization that allows Christ's healing presence to reside freely. I've worked in both clinical and academic settings. Being at the College is the best of both worlds because you stay abreast of best practices and are able to translate them into practice to benefit those we serve."
"I began working for the System 34 years ago as a nursing assistant. After graduating from St John's School of Nursing, I gained awesome experiences in the emergency department, with the helicopter flight team and in medical surgical areas. I enjoyed mentoring new nurses, which led me to nursing education at St. John's College, where I have been for the past 21 years. It is satisfying when you see a student grasp a difficult concept or gain the self-confidence to effectively care for a patient. My greatest accomplishments happen each time a student leaves my office or classroom with encouragement to persevere through the rigors of the program. Each graduation is a touching experience for me; it is a time to reflect and be joyful for the educational journey of each cohort."
"I love helping the nursing students. They are so busy with classes and clinicals. I try to do whatever I can to make their lives a little easier. On the last day of finals, the seniors all gathered in front of my desk and gave me a gift. They were crying and I was crying. They told me how much they would miss me and how much they appreciated all I did for them. Working here, I have learned to treat others as I want one of my family members to be treated. I feel that I have gotten more compassionate. I hope I have touched people's lives as much as they have touched mine."
"My job involves counseling students and their families on the options available to finance their education. The satisfying part is helping each applicant make an informed decision and relieving them of their anxiety. We approach every situation with our students in mind. We're a small group here at the College, so supporting each other is imperative. We have a Leadership Team meeting every week to make sure that no one becomes overburdened. We have an 'all hands on deck' attitude, which I truly appreciate. Every time I hear a student say 'Thank you!' or 'Mary's on top of it,' I know that what I do is more than just a job. My role affects students' lives, and I only hope to affect them in a positive way."
"I have been a faculty member of the College for the past eight years and this year, with the help of tuition assistance from the hospital, I enrolled in a PhD program for nursing education. My greatest accomplishment was taking the lead for the development of the simulation lab. It is exciting to see the lab increase in its productivity with student simulations and the creativity it brings out in the faculty. It is satisfying to watch students and graduates grow in their professional development and knowledge over the years. Nursing is a challenging profession. It amazes me the number of dedicated nurses out there answering a true calling to serve in this materialistic world. It brings me hope."
